85 Degrees Tanning Basics
New to indoor tanning or just have a few questions? We're here to help! We want you to get the best tan possible by knowing as much as possible:

How is indoor tanning different from tanning outside?
Tanning in a tanning bed uses the same UV rays that the sun uses to activate the color in your skin to get darker. So the color you get will always be your natural color. But tanning gets nasty (indoors or out) from overexposure. That’s why tanning indoors is better—there’s a time limit so there are no mistakes. There are different beds and time limits for how recently you’ve been tanning and for your personal skin type. Let the trained associates at 85 help you start at the right level.

How can I speed up the process?
It usually takes 24 to 36 hours for the human skin to show the results of UV tanning, and you can only tan once a day. Using a lotion with an accelerator helps your skin cells react faster; a lotion with a bronzer (or multiple bronzers) darkens your skin almost instantly (within 6 hours) on the surface while your deeper skin tone catches up; a sunless tan (spray tan or airbrushing) gives you an instant, natural shade–darker skin without any exposure to UV rays.

What do I need to start?
All you need is eyewear, some indoor tanning lotion, and 10 to 20 minutes. Each bed is in a private, lockable room, where you can disrobe as much or as little as you like and relax while the warm rays activate the vitamin D in your skin. Eye protection is necessary to protect them from serious damage—and it's the law. We never share eyewear (yuk!) You can get disposables or keep your own personal pair at 85 Degrees in storage with your lotion, ready for the next visit. You can also bring in a CD of your own music to listen to!

Do I have to use lotion? Can I bring in my own?
Indoor tanning lotion is specially formulated to work in tanning beds. Without it, rough, dry skin cells bounce those UV rays back and tanning just plain takes a lot longer. Tanning without lotion is like driving with the brakes on—you’ll get there…eventually.
You can bring in your own indoor tanning lotion, as long as an associate approves it. Outdoor tanning lotion has SPF in it (UV–blocking elements you don’t want) but also oils that will permanently damage the acrylic in the beds, so they cannot be used under any circumstances. You cannot use your own moisturizing lotion before you tan, for same reason.

How often do you clean the beds?
We are psychotic about this. After every customer, everything (bed acrylics, handles, doorknobs, etc.) is cleaned with a disinfecting spray.
